  • The VU Journal Publishing Guide shows you:

    1. The most important scientific journals in your field and their impact metrics.
    2. If the journal allows Open Access publishing.
    3. If the VU has an Open Access deal (APC discount) with the publisher.

    How to use this guide:

    1. If you know the title, and want information about open access or impact.
      1. Type part of the title in the search box, press search.
      2. Select the title of the journal to read more information on the open access possibilities and instructions to get a discount (if available) and impact.
    2. If you want to know what open access options are available in journals covering a certain topic, relevant to your research.
      1. Type a topic in the search box. The title field and keyword fields will be searched.
      2. You can sort the result by Impact factor (ISI and Scopus Citescore) and on title.
      3. Filter the results (see facets on the left of the screen) to show only open access journals, or journals with a VU Open Access deal (APC discount).
      4. Select the title of the journal to read more information on the open access options and instructions to get a waiver or discount (if available).

Impact factor (ISI impact factor): in a given year, the impact factor of a journal is the average number of citations received per paper published in that journal during the two preceding years in Web of Science.

Impact (Scopus CiteScore):is the number of citations received by a journal in one year to documents published in the three previous years, divided by the number of documents indexed in Scopus published in those same three years..

The impact factor and the CiteScore are not normalized for a subject field and therefore give a raw indication of the average number of citations a publication published in the journal will likely receive.

Some journals do not charge for Open Access publishing, while other journals do. To support researchers in publishing their research Open Access, deals have been negotiated with various publishers. Depending on the deal, the corresponding author may get a certain discount on the Article Processing Charges (APCs), which are the costs of publishing an article Open Access.

To make use of an Open Access deal when publishing an article, the corresponding author of the article must be affiliated with a Dutch university, that makes use of the deal, at the moment of acceptance of the article. Moreover, the author must actively arrange the use of a deal; discounts are not applied automatically. See the journal detail page or contact your library for more information.

For some journals Open Access publishing is supported and all or part of their articles are freely available to readers. For other journals there is no information whether they make all or part of their articles freely available to readers and the Open Access support of these journals is set to unknown.

In case the complete contents of a journal is available to readers at no costs, it is also known as a full Open Access (Gold) journal. If only part of the articles are freely available to readers, the journal is known as a hybrid Open Access journal. For hybrid journals, authors can choose Open Access publishing once their article has been accepted for publication.

A Gold Open Access journal makes its complete contents available to readers at no costs. This is also known as a full Open Access journal.

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) provides a selected list of Gold Open Access journals. Open Access journals are selected for this list based upon several criteria (All content is Open Access, peer review system, running title, etc.).

Based upon Impact Factors, the Journal Citation Reports provide rankings of journals in subject categories. A journal is placed in one (or more) of relevant subject categories.

Each journal with an Impact Factor can be placed in a quartile Q1 to Q4 according to the position it has in the Impact Factor distribution of the subject category it belongs to. Q1 represents the top 25%, Q2 the top 50% to top 25%, Q3 the top 75% to top 50% and Q4 the bottom 25% of the Impact Factor distribution for journals per subject category. In case a journal has multiple quartile scores (because it belongs to multiple subject categories), all scores (including the subject categories for which they have been determined) are presented.
